Father Dave Holloway
Fr. Dave Holloway was born June 13, 1950 in Chillicothe, MO. He attended Bishop Hogan Memorial Grade school in Chillicothe graduating 8th grade in 1964. Fr. Dave graduated high school from St. Joseph Academy in Chillicothe in 1968. He was active in Boy Scouts, as an altar server and worked summers on his grandparents' farm while growing up in Chillicothe.
In the fall of 1968 Father Dave began at Rockhurst College (now University). He didn't finish college as scheduled due to the draft. In 1972 Fr. Dave enlisted in US Navy. During his 4 years in the Navy he served on the USS Brownson (DD 868) and the USS Sierra (AD 18). Fr. Dave at the time was an Interior Communications Electrician specializing in GYRO Compasses. He attained the rank of Petty Officer Second Class, the equivalent of a Sergeant. His time in the Navy then was spent in the Atlantic and Mediterranean areas.
After being discharged from the Navy Fr. Dave returned to Kansas City and finished at Rockhurst College graduating in 1977 with a degree in History and Political Science. In 1978 Fr. Dave began studies for the priesthood at St. Thomas Seminary in Denver, CO. He was ordained a Deacon for the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph in June 1981 and served his Deacon year at Our Lady of Lourdes in Raytown. Fr. Dave was ordained a Priest by Bishop John Sullivan on June 5, 1982. He was assigned as an Associate Pastor at St. Catherine's in Kansas City, MO from June 1982 - June 1986. From June 1986 - May 1987 he served as Associate Pastor at Holy Cross Parish in Kansas City.
In June 1987 Fr. Dave entered the US Navy again this time as a Chaplain. After completing Chaplain School in Newport, RI Fr. Dave was assigned to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni Japan from August 1987 - July 1989. His next assignment was a new large amphibious ship the USS Wasp (LAD 1), home port Norfolk VA, as Ship's Chaplain. Fr. Dave was on board from July 1989 - April 1992 during which he served in the First Gulf War. He then served from May 1992 - May 1995 at the US Coast Guard Training Center, Petaluma, CA. From May 1992-September 1997 Fr. Dave served at an isolated Naval Support Activity in La Maddalena, Sardinia, Italy. In October of 1997 Fr. Dave was assigned to the as yet unfinished USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). The Truman was home ported in Norfolk, VA He served aboard the aircraft carrier Truman until November 2000. In December 2000 Fr. Dave reported to Naval Air Station Oceana Virginia Beach, VA. At this large Air Station Fr. Dave was responsible for the Catholic Chapel with over 600 children in CCD, grades 1 - 10. Fr. Dave retired as a Lieutenant Commander, US Navy Chaplain Corps on August 1, 2003.
Fr. Dave spent the fall of 2003 on sabbatical at St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park, CA and then served at St. Therese North Parkville, MO from January to June of this year. Fr. Dave is the oldest of 5 children of Louis "Corky" and Rita Holloway. Fr. Dave's mother passed away in May of 2000. His father lives in Independence and his brother Andy and family in Raytown.
Fr. Dave enjoys reading, mystery, and history especially, watching baseball, football and other sports (tried to play in his younger days with limited success). He plays golf, at least it resembles golf. He enjoys travel. His journeys in the Navy took him to 35 countries and he has visited 49 of the 50 states.
